Your Finances God’s Way Book Review

Managing money and following God may at times feel like they are on two ends of one spectrum. As Christians, we tend to see things like budgets, savings, and investment accounts as secular. When we do this though, we dig ourselves into a deep hole of financial despair full of pain and extreme stress, and that is definitely not what God wants for us.

For some, it may come as a shock to hear that God actually cares a LOT about what you do with your money, and He actually gives a ton of advice on how to manage it. In Chapter 3, Scott suggests that “Money is the foundation or the training wheels to true faithfulness.”

Check out my interview with Your Finances God’s Way author, Scott LaPierre:

Topics Discussed in the Interview

  • Are we required to tithe?
  • If we don’t need to tithe – How much are we supposed to give?
  • The Biblical promises around giving/tithing
  • How do we discern to whom or where we give?
  • How to become more generous with our finances

A Few Things I Love About Your Finances God’s Way

Scripturally Rooted

As a pastor who knows his stuff, Scott does an amazing job starting the whole book, as well as each chapter, with the Bible. He backs up all of his claims about finances with Bible verses and does an incredible job connecting the links between New and Old Testament lessons about money.

I thought Scott did a really great job explaining why we are no longer required to tithe, yet at the same time called to greater generosity under the new covenant. This is something I have always believed, and Scott gave me a new perspective and even more reason to be solidified in this lesson.

Very Easy To Read

While Scott shares a lot of theology, he explains it all in a way that anyone could pick up and understand without a seminary degree. He gives a lot of very relatable examples to help you connect the dots between lessons and practical money applications.

Explaining ‘The Love Of Money’

Money is mentioned in over 2,000 Bible verses, and it is very clear that God wants us to be extremely careful with how we use and view our money. However, many Christians understand the idea of “loving your money” incorrectly, thinking that – to have money = to love money.

I have always appreciated the way that Paul David Tripp has explained loving money in his book, Redeeming Money. And yet, Scott gives a brand new-to-me way of explaining the love of money using the Parable of the Rich Fool.

Accompanying Workbook

Your Finances God’s Way comes with a workbook to help you retain the lessons that you are learning within the book. It is a great addition as it gives you a brief snapshot of the lessons learned in each chapter, and also has extra questions for you to think about as pertains to your own personal financial situation.

Great Lessons Learned From Your Finances God’s Way

As a Christian money coach myself, I love studying the topic of faith and finances. Many people might think that I know all there is to know about the topic, but after reading new books I always discover something new. This was definitely the case with Your Finances God’s Way! I really appreciated some of the new and refreshing perspectives around Bible verses that I have read and repeated to others countless times.

One of those passages comes from Mathew 24. Here is where we find the Parable of the Talents. This is one of the quintessential Bible verses about managing money and yet Scott brings to life some lessons from it that you may not have ever recognized before. One such lesson being God judges our proportion versus our portion.

It can be hard thinking that someone else was blessed with tons of money and think that God must really like them and see others who have very little and imagine that they must have less favor in God’s eyes. However, when it comes to our personal finances, God gives each of us exactly what we are able to manage according to our faithfulness. When we manage our finances well, God may entrust us with more.

Knowing Exactly What to Do With Money is Tough

With my money coaching clients, I walk them through a process of setting up a value based budget, and help them understand 4 ways to discern where to spend their money. Many times it is all a lot easier in theory than it is actually applying the lessons. In his book, Scott says that “More wisdom is required with finances than most parts of the Christian life; therefore, managing money involves more than mere self-control and discipline.” I absolutely agree with this!

Sometimes, it can be easy to think that the answer to our money stresses is simply more money. But we all know the saying, “more money, more problems.” One of the most detrimental money events that a person may experience is assuming a large amount of money all at once. Like winning the lottery or inheriting millions of dollars. While it may seem like a dream come true, we have all heard the stories of the winners falling into deep financial trouble within just a year.

Why does this happen? Because more likely than not, they didn’t need more money to solve their problems. They needed more wisdom.

“Giving poor stewards the wisdom to be good stewards is more valuable than any amount of money.”
Scott LaPierre

I really appreciate how Scott explains how important it is to have wisdom when it comes to Biblical financial stewardship. An amazing thing happens when we start to gain wisdom and seek out the Lord, we become good stewards. Scott says, “When we work on redirecting our hearts we are also simultaneously redirecting our savings, spending, and giving.”

This book will be a great addition to your bookshelf and a fantastic one to add to your faith and finance journey. Let me know if you end up reading it and what your thoughts are on the book.
