Why Be Counseled If You Have The Bible?

But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.
Hebrews 3:13

God has given us so much wisdom through His Word. The Bible gives us vivid examples of how to live out our faith. It gives us a glimpse as to what it looks like to be in communion with Christ when it comes to our money management. As we read in Ephesians 6 and even in Hebrews 4, the Bible is a sword, a tool, that we can use to protect and defend ourselves against attacks from the enemy. This is practically done simply by filling our minds with the Word and going to it when we need counsel for our lives.

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)

So if we have this beautiful and perfect tool given to us by God to consult for wise counsel, what is the point of getting professional counseling or coaching?

If you were to put your hands infront of your eyes and tried to look through them, the image in front of you would not be perfect. You may see bits and pieces of the landscape in front of you, but your hands would still be blinding you from seeing the whole picture. This is exactly what it is like to live as sinful humans.

None of us have the gift of complete self-awareness. So while sin still lives inside of us, there will be discrepancies in the way we see ourselves because there will always be pockets of spiritual blindness in us. This is no fault of our own, but as long as sin still exists inside of us it is in our nature to deflect Scripture’s confrontation onto those who we think fit the warnings and truths more than we ourselves do leaving us unchanged.

We all desperately need something that can cut through our blindness and confront us with who we are and the thoughts and desires of our selfish, wandering hearts. And even though we have the Word of God to help us with this process, our sin still hardens us and ultimately deceives us from seeing the full picture of our faults.

That something can be a someone! A trusted individual who also fills their mind with truths from the Bible and who can act as a mirror to reflect God’s word into our life.

We should give thanks every day that the word of God functions in the life of God’s people as a mirror. When we look with ready minds and open hearts into the mirror of the word of God, we see ourselves as we actually are.

So I would encourage you. If you do not already have someone giving you biblical counsel and guidance – find someone! Consider the areas in you life that you may need a mirror to reflect yourself as you actually are. Is it with your mental health, marriage, parenting, friendships, work, or possibly your finances?

As a Christian money counselor, I work with believers to be that mirror. To help them recognize the areas in which sin is grasping their hearts. Is that something you could benefit from? If so, I would encourage you to respond to this email and we can set up a call to discuss if getting professional coaching is a good fit for you.
