The Purpose of God's Generosity
Series: A Season of Generosity
Devotional: 3 of 5
And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.
2 Corinthians 9:8
Why does God give generously to us? Because we are so awesome and deserve it? Because we have a right to good gifts?
I’m sure you try really hard to be a good person – faithful, truthful, loving, kind, honest, patient.
The truth is, no matter how hard you try, or how good you are at any given moment, there is absolutely nothing you can do to earn more (or less!) favor with God.
Ezekiel 36:32;22
I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the sovereign Lord…
…It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name…
God blesses us abundantly so that we may be conduits of his generosity. He pours into us so we may go and pour into others!
I love how my friend Art Rainer explains it in his book The Money Challenge,
“Certainly, God is the giver of wealth. But he does not provide wealth for hoarding. He gives wealth to share. He gives wealth for generosity. He gives wealth to invest in eternal treasures. He gives wealth to advance his mission.”
-Art Rainer
God is generous to us so that we can go and be generous to others.

Reflection Questions
- Be honest with yourself, have you felt as though you deserved God’s generosity? Maybe even a little duped if you don’t receive it?
- What is one thing you can do this week to realign your spending with God’s desire for generosity?
