The Consequences of Greed
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
Matthew 6:24
Greed isn’t set aside only for those who are very wealthy. In fact, there are many examples of very goldy people who were wealthy throughout the Bible. When we focus on the definition of greed as ‘a desire for more things’ you can quickly see how all of us struggle with at least some form of greed.
I myself have struggled with various forms of greed. I have struggled with my own impossible-to-be-fulfilled desire for more things.
When your mind is so focused on obtaining what you rightfully have to claim it is very hard to find satisfaction or contentment in anything less than what it is you desire.
I know this from personal experience after coveting things like motherhood, homeownership, and success within my business – all goals that, after many years, I realized I was holding much higher than my relationship with Christ. I was never content with where I was at and utterly dissatisfied with my life. This overwhelming sense of desire for these goals was all I could think about and this led me to a place of pure discontentment with the things God had put in front of me at that time.
Just as Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:24, we cannot serve two masters – we will end up hating one and loving the other. Whatever takes over our minds will be the thing that we love.
What is that thing that has taken over your mind?
- Getting that raise or promotion?
- Escaping your 9-5?
- Moving to a new city?
- Paying off all of your debt?
The thing is, that none of these goals or desires are bad in and of themselves. In fact, the goals I was chasing after were desires that I believe came directly from the Lord himself. But the problem I faced, and that maybe you are facing today, is that I made my goals much more important than God himself.
When you are feeling a sense of discontentment or frustration toward your current circumstances, stop and consider what it is that you are loving more than God. Because chances are that what is going around you is not the problem, but your heart response to those things.
No matter how much we try to fix the issues in our lives by ourselves, nothing will fill the holes we feel in our souls except for Jesus Christ. God sent His son to pay the price for our sins by dying on a cross. Jesus rose from the grave, conquering death. This is excellent news for us because when we trust in Him alone as our Lord we are reunited with God and can live a life with Him that starts now and lasts forever!
