How to Set Money Goals That Mean Something

Series: What is Biblical Financial Freedom
Devotional: 3 of 4

January is the perfect time to set new goals. It is your chance to reflect on the past year and start off refreshed. If you don’t already do so, I would encourage you to take 30 minutes, maybe an hour, to set some goals for yourself.

I want to give you a few pointers on how you can set really awesome goals for your finances. This current devo series is all about Biblical Financial Freedom, so we won’t be setting any ordinary money goals, but I want to walk you through a few quick tips to setting money goals that are Kingdom-Focused.

  1. Always start this process with prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you as you set your goals.
  2. Your goals should not revolve around making your name great, but making the name of God greater. Take a moment to write down each of the goals that comes to mind. Ask yourself, “Why do I really want to achieve this goal?” Be honest.
  3. Challenge yourself to set goals that aren’t necessarily for your own enjoyment, comforts, security, or accomplishment. Write this sentence down, “I choose to serve others instead of seeking out my own comfort.” as a way to remind yourself of your purpose.
  4. Just because something is obtainable doesn’t mean that it is good for your soul. The desires that you hold deep in your heart are good, but the way you choose to fulfil those desires are not always the way God designed them to be fulfilled.
  5. Remember that even if you desire something and God doesn’t intend for you to have that thing, he is not cruel. Trust that He knows what is best and will ultimately lead you to abundance.

If you are looking for some more clarity on the types of goals you should be setting for yourself, what I would recommend to you is to become very clear on what your unique calling is here on earth. What has God specifically designed you to do?

Once you know the answer to that question, this should help set the course for what you do and how you do it.

I wanted to give you something to help you out as you brainstorm what goals you want to work on this year. Use this Financial Goal Setting Workbook to help you journal through some of these tips above.

Reflection Questions

  • Are you clear on what you are uniquely and specifically called to do? Has your financial situation gotten in the way of you pursuing your calling?
  • What things in your life are you pursuing simply because you deeply desire them? Could it be that the way you pursue this desire is not the way God designed?
