How To Save Money On Groceries
Inflation and food shortages across the globe are causing grocery prices to rise dramatically. How do you save money on groceries these days? Is it even possible??
Check out some of these tips to help you save money on your grocery purchases.
Shop Your Pantry First
Before you decide there is nothing to eat in your house, sift through your pantry, refrigerator, and freezer. You may be surprised by the fact that you have enough to put together a meal for dinner tonight.
Plan Ahead
Plan out what you are going to eat based on what you already have or what is on sale and in season at the grocery store. If it’s the beginning of summer, it will be harder to find squash in the stores and therefore they will likely be very expensive. Creating a spending plan will also help you stay within your budget each month and not go overboard. Another added bonus of planning is reducing food waste!
Rewards Cards
Many grocery stores have rewards programs that offer discounts, coupons, and points for other rewards. Be sure you are signed up for the rewards program at your grocery store.
Generic Brands
There’s this misconception that in order to get the best foods you have to buy name brands. But generic brands can be just as good and yet a ton cheaper. Kroger, Target, Amazon, Walmart, Costco, and Sam’s Club all have their own generic brands.
Cash Back Apps
You are losing money if you aren’t using cashback apps when shopping for groceries! Check out some of my favorite cash back apps:
- Rakuten
- Ibotta
- Honey
- Fetch
- NCP
- CapitalOne Shopping
Buying in Bulk
In general, when you buy more of something at once the price for that item is reduced. This is a great way to save money on nonperishables or foods you go through very quickly. Memberships to Sam’s Club, or Costco can help you find great prices for bulk items.
Meatless Meals
I’m a big fan of meat, but my husband and I noticed our grocery bills significantly decreasing when we purchased less of it. Reducing the amount of meat you eat can help you save more money.
Subscribe and Save
Subscribe and Save is becoming a more popular way to save money on groceries and common home supplies. When you subscribe to get an item regularly you have the potential to save more money. Some places that offer Subscribe and Save are Amazon and Grove.
Potlucks with Friends
Join efforts to save money with your friends by throwing a potluck. This is a great way to help each other out and come together as a community.
Garden!
Something I am hoping to get into more is gardening. There way many cost-effective ways to get into gardening as a beginner. If you live in a high-rise apartment, you can garden too! We started our gardening journey with an Aerogarden in our kitchen. It is a great place to start and it doesn’t take up a lot of space. If you have a bit more space, grab yourself an EarthBox and get started.
