Books for Christian Entrepreneurs

1. Toxic Charity: How Churches and Charities Hurt Those They Help (And How to Reverse It)

Toxic Charity by Robert D. Lupton

Author: Robert D. Lupton

Toxic Charity dives into poignant insights about how some of the ways the church and non-profits have, with the best of intentions, caused more harm than good. Better yet, it offers practical solutions to move your business or personal practices in a better direction. As someone with a heart for global development and empowerment, this book (along with a short documentary “Poverty Inc”) has helped me shift my perspective to be more humble, and think of innovative solutions that more fully serve the people I’m trying to help. The reason I give this as my top recommendation for Christian Entrepreneurs is because I hope that business women and men who claim to bring Kingdom with our work will focus on listening, especially to the marginalized, and adjust our methods and status quo’s to reduce any harm we may cause; reading Toxic Charity was a great way for me to begin to do that.

2. EntreLeadership: 20 Years of Practical Business Wisdom from the Trenches

EntreLeadership by Dave Ramsey

Author: Dave Ramsey

This book helped me to change my perspective on the importance of delegation in our business. Particularly as we grew beyond just having basic roles and positions. Ramsey gives great insight on how crucial it is to allow employees to be their own decision makers. If your employees need to bring every decision to you it will create a bottleneck in the workflow. But by empowering others with the freedom to make their own decisions you create trust and a smooth flow of work.

3. How God Makes Men: Ten Epic Stories. Ten Proven Principles. One Huge Promise for Your Life.

How God Makes Men by Patrick Morley

Author: Patrick Morley

Even though it’s not a business book, I think How God Made Men is a great case study on how to prevail in tough times and see God’s power in every area of life. I read it last year before I bought my first house flip and it showed me, through the lives of Biblical figures, God was working on them and through them to accomplish His plan.

4. Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones

Atomic Habits by James Clear

Author: James Clear

Atomic Habits by James Cleary is an incredible read. As a Christian entrepreneur, I made the mistake at the beginning focusing on finance books, and I wish I had started with this book. It goes into detail on how to create productive habits that you can easily keep with you throughout your entrepreneurship journey. You will be having people ask you constantly “How do you do it all?!”

5. Called to Create: A Biblical Invitation to Create, Innovate, and Risk

Called to Create by Jordan Raynor

Author: Jordan Raynor

This is one of my favorite books and it is one that I am constantly recommending to other Christian entrepreneurs. It paints a really wonderful picture for anyone out there who is trying to build or create something. God gave us his creative spirit and we need to use it to bring glory to him. This book truly helped me to view my creativity as a gift from God to be celebrated. View my full review of Called to Create here. Also check out Jordan Raynor’s new book, Master of One.

6. The Legend of the Monk and the Merchant: Twelve Keys to Successful Living

Author: Terry Felber

In this quick read, you will find twelve life and financial principles that, when applied, result in successful living. Written in storybook form, The Legend of the Monk and the Merchant holds your attention easily as you eagerly await the next principle that Antonio is going to teach his grandson. This book demonstrates the importance of both ministry and secular work and how we can appreciate them both because they are tied together to build the Kingdom of God.

7. The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World

AuthorJohn Mark Comer

Some might wonder why this book made this list since it’s technically not about entrepreneurship, but this is required reading for any Christian entrepreneur I coach! I personally read it twice a year because it always brings me closer to God, makes me a better husband and dad, and makes me a more joyful and peaceful entrepreneur. The culture around us glorifies hustle and hurry. Here’s the thing: they are NOT required for success in business (in fact, I would argue they hinder it) and they are antithetical to what it means to follow Jesus.
When God is in the #1 spot on your priority list, you run your business from a place of joy, peace, and love – you are proactive instead of reactive and calm instead of anxious. If you want to stay spiritually alive while running a successful business, read this book and more importantly APPLY IT DAILY! (It’s a great pairing with what you learn in Atomic Habits!)

8. Gospel Patrons, People Whose Generosity Changed the World

Author: John Rinehart

Gospel Patrons is the story of three great movements of God and the (largely unknown) benefactors who contributed to those movements. We know names such as Tyndale, the Apostle Paul, Wilberforce, and Newton, but this is a story of the men and women God used behind the scenes to support and uphold his work in the world.
This book both reminds me that God is still at work, and more specifically, that God accomplishes his work through, often, normal means. Gospel Patrons serves as an encouragement and a reminder that the role of the businessman or women, the entrepreneur, or the layperson is never wasted, but has a very specific role in accomplishing the Great Commission.
Never, apart from the scriptures, has a book gripped my attention and attitude toward my work than this one.
