It is fascinating to find instances throughout the Bible where God speaks about real estate, land ownership, and homes. While other money topics are typically more spoken about more in the Bible like budgeting and debt, it is cool to see that real estate investing did happen back in biblical times.

Bible Verses About Real Estate Investing:

  • Proverbs 31:16-18
  • Deuteronomy 19:14
  • Acts 2:42-47
  • Matthew 21:33
  • Acts 5:1-2

Proverbs 31:16-18

“She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.”

These verses are particularly interesting to me because it is about a woman who is investing in real estate. This is from the famous Proverbs 31 chapter that describes The Wife of Noble Character. How inspiring is it that this Godly woman is buying land and using it to earn a profit?

I don’t think that this means that in order to be a Godly woman we must be investing in real estate. However, I think that we can deduce that God values someone who uses their knowledge and skills that he has gifted them with in order to make a profit. She is clearly good at what she does if she is working vigorously in order to make sure that her endeavors are profitable. God gives us each different skills, talents, and abilities and wants us to become masterful, but not for our own glory, rather for HIS glory!

Deuteronomy 19:14

“Do not move your neighbor’s boundary stone set up by your predecessors in the inheritance you receive in the land the LORD your God is giving you to possess.”

In any area in life, we need to have integrity. We should be honest in all of our undertakings. This also applies to how we handle real estate investing. As investors, we should not be cutting corners or trying to cheat others out of their assets.

Also, God makes it clear that all of our possessions, including our real estate assets, belong to Him. We must our possessions in this manner and honor God with how we deal with these assets he has blessed us with.

Acts 2:42-47

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”

In this passage, we see that the believers sold their property and possessions to give to anyone that was in need. As real estate investors, we have a tremendous opportunity to use our real estate to provide for those in need. In this Biblical example, the believers are selling the property and then using the money to help those who have a need.

However, I think that we can get creative with the property we own in order to help meet the needs of other believers. I have heard of investors who have purchased vacation properties that they lend out to those in the church for free when someone needs a getaway.

There are also other investors who use their real estate to help house former prison inmates. My husband and I actually have a rental property that is being rented by a faith-based rehabilitation center that uses the duplex as a sober living community.

Matthew 21:33

“Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country.”

This is from the beginning of the Parable of the Tenants. Jesus is talking to the chief priests and the Pharisees. (I encourage you to go read the entire parable: Matthew 21:33-46). This is a fitting Bible verse about real estate investing because it is about a man who rented out his land to tenants. In this parable, the tenants did not uphold their end of the lease (giving the fruit to the landlord).

Jesus asks the chief priests and Pharisees what the landlord should do? The Pharisees suggest that the landlord should basically take revenge on his tenants (I mean the tenants did end up killing the landlord’s son and his servants!).

Jesus responds and says in verses 42-44:

“Have you never read in the Scriptures:

“‘The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;
the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’[h]?

“Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”

This parable was used by Jesus to shed light on the fact that the Pharisees were like the bad tenants. He had cornered them into admitting the kind of punishment they deserved for their bad behavior. Yet, instead of admitting their faults and changing their ways, they looked for a way to arrest him (verse 46)

We are to love our tenants because they too are loved by God, but this doesn’t always mean letting them continue to disobey the rules. At some point, their punishment will come and they will need to be properly put into place for their misbehavior.

Acts 5:1-2

“Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property. With his wife’s full knowledge he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles’ feet.”

This section of Acts 5 is particularly strange. It is about Ananias and his wife Sapphira who had just sold a piece of property. Together, they decided to lie about the amount of money they had made from the deal and kept part of the profits for themselves.

I’m not sure why they were supposed to bring the entire amount to the apostles. My theory is that maybe they were acting as a real estate agent for them and had to sell off a piece of property. This is just a theory… If that were the case though, that would make sense that they would need to bring back the entire profits from the sale.

Either way, the important thing to take note of from this passage is that they lied about how much they had earned. So we too should not lie about our profits, especially when it comes to taxes. But also when working with other partners, lenders, and investors. We should always be honest about our work.

Take Away From these Bible Verses About Real Estate Investing

It is clear from these Bible verses about real estate investing that how we invest is important to God. Our real estate investments should be used to benefit the Kingdom of God. In all areas of business, we need to look to implement our faith.

It is critical that we handle our investments with integrity and find ways to benefit and serve others. Real estate is such a powerful tool and God wants us to handle it with great responsibility. God calls us to be creative with the resources we are given. Through our excellence in our work, we are mimicking the way that our God operates.

  2. I would challenge your remark about the Parable of the Tenants, where you said, “Jesus explains that the landlord instead gives the tenants the land”. Matthew 21:38–44 says, “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. Anyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.” What would normally happen is that when there was no heir, the tenants would receive the land as an inheritance. But here Jesus is saying that justice would be done and the tenants would not receive the land, it would be taken from them and given to the Gentiles, because they did not recognise the Messiah when he appeared, instead the tenants would be crushed by the stone of Christ. Please clarify.

  3. Proverbs 31:16-18, People used money then. Ask and receive seek and find was not used. Indians obeyed God’s laws better than the people who came here. Who was punished? Deuteronomy 19:14: That is talking about land that God gave to the Israelite’s.
Acts 2:42-47: What does that have to do with land? That has to do with people. Matthew 21:33: That is a parable. Acts 5:1-2: They promised to pay money not paying what they said they would pay. Everything is the Lords.
We need to bless others with those gifts.

Acts 2:42-47:That is knock and the door will be opened unto you. going door to door.
Would it be that we could do that, going house to house like they did. That is knock and the door will be opened unto you.

Taxes: Money has the name and image on it. Money belongs to the name and image that is on money, and coins. Things will change when people see what I am talking about.
Faith waits for what is not yet seen. Money is seen.

  4. Psalm 24:1-3: 24 The earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

2 For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.

3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? or who shall stand in his holy place? King James Version.
How can people own, but, and sell, what is not even theirs?

How can people own, buy, and sell, what is not even theirs?

  8. Isaiah 5:8
KJV: Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!
NLT: What sorrow for you who buy up house after house and field after field, until everyone is evicted and you live alone in the land.

    1. Another great Bible verse! Thanks for sharing with us, Sam. Sort of an interesting verse that I haven’t noticed before. What do you suppose is the lesson to be learned from it today?

  9. No Christian’s should be calling them self landlords there is only one lord of all things!
Also you make a living from doing very little and from hard working tenants.we as Christian’s are meant to love our neighbours as we love Christ.would you make a living of Jesus Christ ?
You are in big trouble is your are a Christian and call your self land lord!

    1. Unfortunately, I believe there may be a misunderstanding of the responsibilities of “landlords”. Good landlords actually are tasked with doing a tremendous amount of work as well as taking care of property and tenants. Many tenants have chosen to live as tenants because they are not able physically or financially to take care of themselves in this capacity. It is a landlords responsibility to help with their gifts and earthly resources to care for these people. In the end, landlords are just caretakers of this land, property and those who reside in these homes. Ultimately, the property and land is Gods as all things are Gods. It is good to give respect, kindness and love to all tenants as it is equally important to give that to the landlord and to praise the lord for sharing these gifts with one another. It is not about the property, it is about the relationships and Gods gifts that we should use to bless one another.
