Here’s the big list of money topics in the Bible, and here is a list of over 100 Bible verses about money.

What is Biblical Financial Stewardship?

Biblical financial stewardship is about recognizing that what we have is not our own, but it has been entrusted to us to manage with excellence. This includes not only our wealth (no matter how much we have), but it also includes our time, talents, and energy that can be used to produce wealth.

How we use these things will be a testimony of the one to whom we believe it belongs. Biblical financial stewardship admits that our money and the ability to make money all belong to God and should be used for his glory and the good of others.

If you believe that everything you have (time, talents, and resources) belongs to you, then you are sorely mistaken.

What Does The Bible Say About Financial Stewardship?

The Bible teaches us that what we have does not come from our own works. Sure, we may have gone to work and labored in order to produce an income. But the ability to do your job was also gifted to you by God. Here are five lessons from the Bible about stewardship.

Sometimes it can be difficult to think about good stewardship when your financial situation is stressful. We all go through times of financial struggles, but this should not stop us from being faithful stewards. In fact, I believe it is the time to show the Lord that we can be faithful over the little that we have. Is it time that you sought ways to be a better steward and learned to participate in God’s Kingdom through your financial stewardship?

Biblical Lessons About Stewardship

  1. What you have is not your own, it all comes from and belongs to God (Acts 20:32, 1 Corinthians 3:9-11, 1 Chronicles 22:18, Psalm 24:1, 1 Chronicles 29:12, James 1:17, Psalm 115:16, Deuteronomy 8:18
  2. He has specifically chosen and entrusted you to be a steward (John 15:16, Psalm 115:16, 1 Chronicles 22:18, Deuteronomy 8:18)
  3. He expects you to manage it well (Luke 12:48, Colossians 3:23, Matthew 25:21, Luke 16:11, Proverbs 10:4, 1 Corinthians 4:1-2)
  4. Your purpose is to glorify Him and do good for others (1 Peter 2:5, Matthew 10: 7, Matthew 5:15, Ephesians 4:11-13, Proverbs 3:9, 1 Peter 4:10)
  5. The Holy Spirit will help you discern how to specifically steward your resources (Psalm 127:1, John 15:5, 2 Corinthians 9:6-7, Ecclesiastes 7:12, Titus 2:11-12)
  6. When you try to do it on your own for your own glory, you will face difficulties (John 15:5, Luke 12:48, Galatians 6:7, Psalm 127:1)

How to Be a Good Steward of Your Money

Good financial stewards are always seeking to please the Lord first and foremost. They are asking questions like how they can be a part of building the Kingdom of God rather than their own. One of the primary ways that you can be a good steward of your money is by being generous givers. Your generosity can be to your local church

Good stewards are also very grateful for what they have on a regular basis. Generosity stems from being secure in your identity and knowing that, as a son or daughter of the King, you are always taken care of. Gratitude is accepting that God knows what is best for you and that is exactly what you already have.

Another attribute of a good financial steward is to not trust your money more than you trust God. The love of money is a major issue for those who follow Christ because we are easily seduced into thinking that our bank account can give us security when in reality only God can do that for us. Good stewards are not sucked down the rabbit hole of consumerism, and credit cards. However, it’s not just rich people who are lovers of money. Even those without a lot of money can still fall prey and often do when they are feeling financial pressure.

They also have the self-discipline to say no to ungodliness, just as we are taught from Titus 2. Self-discipline with your finances can result from having a good household budget, paying off debt, as well as saving for your future. It is a good thing to simply have a plan and to think about your finances. Not in an obsessive way, but from a management perspective.

Good financial stewards are also always going to God in prayer. Not necessarily to ask for a financial blessing, enough money, or for a financial breakthrough, but they are thanking our generous God for all that they have been given even when they might not have much. Because the blessing of the Lord is not an abundance of wealth, but an abundance of Him. The good news is that God is always ready and willing to pour more of himself into our lives. So pray over your finances!

Dear God, you are so good and gracious to entrust to me the specific resources you have blessed me with. My time, energy, talents, and money are not truly mine, but they are from you and my deepest desire is to glorify you with them. You dwell inside of me through the Holy Spirit, may I listen to you when you are directing me. Lord, I know that you are blessed when I take the time to manage my money well. I want to be excellent at managing my finances, so I ask you to help me budget well, to do good work, and to set aside money for the future. Help me, Yahweh, to be a good steward of my resources. You have given me wisdom through your word, help me remember it as I make financial decisions.

In Christ Jesus’ Name

Amen
