Books On Faith and Work that Every Christian Should Read

Here is a list of books on faith and work that I believe every Christian should read. These books aren’t just for those of us who are business professionals. No, these books are for EVERY Christian.

To understand why it’s important for all of us to read these books, let’s first look at the definition of work.

Here is a list of books on faith and work that I believe every Christian should read. These books aren’t just for those of us who are business professionals. No, these books are for EVERY Christian. They will challenge you and inspire you to be more active in implementing your faith into your work. #faithandwork #christianbooks #christianentrepreneurship

What is Work?

I really like the way that Timothy Keller defines work. He says, that work is “rearranging the raw material of God’s creation in such a way that it helps the world in general, and people in particular, thrive and flourish.”

Now, this definition may sound limiting, however, it is really all-encompassing. John Mark Comer says in his book, Garden City, that work is anything you fill your calendar up with.

Are you a stay-at-home-parent? That is work.
Are you a student? That is work.
Do you work in a fast-food restaurant? That is work.
Are you working for a Fortune 500 company? That is work
Do you spend most of your days doing chores? That is work.

Why It’s Important for Christians to Read Books on Faith and Work

We all do some form of work. Each one of us has something that we’re focusing our attention on. And as Christians, there is no separation between our spiritual life and our daily life. The Bible calls us to be excellent at what we do, and that translates into our jobs and day to day work.

We have the opportunity to bring glory to God and love our neighbors no matter what we are doing with our days. Each one of these books will help you to see the importance of applying your faith to whatever you are doing.

They will challenge you to see your work differently and to think differently about how you go about your everyday tasks. Most importantly, these books will help us bring Christ into our everyday lives.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Every Good Endeavor

Author: Timothy Keller

Every Good Endeavor has become one of the staple books when it comes to topics on faith and work. In his book, Timothy Keller helps us understand that working in a church or a non-profit is not the only way we can honor God through our daily lives. He helps explain that there is no divide between secular and spiritual. Everything we do can and should be an act of worship. This includes our work.

Keller helps us to find purpose in our work beyond making money. There is so much more to our jobs than just showing up. He answers some important questions on the minds of many Christians.

Questions like,
What is the purpose of work?
How can I find meaning and serve customers in a cutthroat, bottom-line-oriented workplace?
How can I use my skills in a vocation that has meaning and purpose?
Can I stay true to my values and still advance in my field?
How do I make the difficult choices that must be made in the course of a successful career?

Called to Create

Author: Jordan Raynor

Called to Create is one of two books that Jordan Raynor has written on the topic of faith and work. This book goes deep into how entrepreneurship aligns perfectly with the character of God.

How? Because our God is a creator himself. We are called to continue his creative work here on earth – taking the materials he has given us in order to make something new with them. That is exactly what an entrepreneur does.

Not only is this book great for entrepreneurs, but it is also meant for creatives; those who make art, write novels, build with their hands, and more. Our creative spirit has been given to us by God, and continuing in that creativeness is to carry out his work here on earth.

One fun thing about this book that anyone would enjoy is that Raynor interviewed many different people who have followed God’s call to creativity. There are many recognizable names throughout the pages.

Check out some important lessons for entrepreneurs to learn from the book Called to Create here.

Author: John Mark Comer

Pastor and speaker, John Mark Comer, wrote this book to help twenty and thirty-somethings discover their calling. He helps people understand how important their daily lives at work and outside of work are to God.

In the book, he answers important questions like
Does God care where I work?
What about what I do with my free time or how much rest I get?
Does he have a clear direction for me?”
This book is short but packed with vital information meant to teach us how to view our daily lives in light of our faith.

Master of One

Author: Jordan Raynor

This is the second of the two books about faith and work written by Jordan Raynor. This book goes into depth on how becoming masterful at one thing is a great way that we can bring glory to God and serve others well.

Not sure what your “one thing” is at this time in life? No problem! Raynor explains how anyone can discover their one thing, and how they can walk down the path towards mastery. The ultimate reason for becoming masterful is not to gain power, wealth, or fame. Rather, mastery is one of the primary ways in which we can bring glory to God and love others through our work.

This book will challenge you within your own career path and hopefully will shed light on whether or not you are on your way towards mastery. Similar to Called to Create, Raynor backs up his theories not only with Biblical evidence, but also with stories from others who have become masterful at their craft.

Excellence Wins

Author: Horst Shulze

This book isn’t explicitly about faith and work, however, it is written by Horst Shulze, the founder of Ritz-Carlton, who is in fact a Christian. The reason I found this book was because Jordan Raynor had interviewed him on his podcast, The Call to Mastery. Shulze talked about how many of the principles he used within his hotels were from the Bible.

This book is the story of how Shulze got to where he is today by applying the principles of excellence throughout his career. I am recommending this book because I think it does a great job portraying how the Biblical principle of excellence can impact our work.

These are just some of the books on faith and work that are out there.

    1. They are great books! I really enjoyed learning about Horst Shulze’s life and finding out that when he was young he aspired to work in hotels! However, his family didn’t like the idea because working in hotels in their time and culture was not looked upon as a respectable career. But he continued to follow the passions that God gave him!
