5 Bible Verses About Money You Need to Know
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”
Hebrews 4:12
Did you know that the Bible has over 2,300 Bible verses about money. Yeah, it’s kind of overwhelming to figure out what we need to know about money and how exactly to apply all the lessons from the Bible into our own finances.
Today, I want to give you 5 that I believe are some of the most important ones to keep at the front of you mind when it comes to biblical money principles.
1 TIMOTHY 6:10
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
This verse is so often misquoted that it is almost embarrassing. Money is not evil. Money itself is neither good or bad. It is simply a tool. However, the LOVE of it is evil. Having a million in your bank account doesn’t mean that you love it. At the same time, having only $10 in your account doesn’t prove that you don’t.
If you are constantly thinking about money, and always desiring more, there may be a bit of a “love of money” problem. This isn’t to condem you or make you feel bad – we all struggle with loving our money more than God when we put our security into our bank accounts. If you didn’t join us for the prayer challenge live, you can still go through it on your own here. It is a great way to help refocus your heart on the Lord.
MALACHI 3:10
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”
It is a bold step of faith to start tithing, 10% sounds like a lot of money. Even though tithing is not a requirement for salvation – thanks to Jesus we no longer have to work our way to heaven – I believe that God desires for us to give MORE than 10% of our incomes.
When Jesus gave his Sermon on the Mount, he basically “leveled up” all of the laws under the Mosaic covenant. He took the law “thou shall not murder” and leveled it up by saying you also shouldn’t be angry at others! He took the law “thou shall not commit adultery” and leveled it up to thinking lustfully of another person.
10% should just be a starting point for believers! God does tell us that when we give freely, we will be provided for in abundance. Though it is not the reason we give, it is definitely a wonderful perk.
PHILIPPIANS 4:19
And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
Speaking of God providing abundantly for you, Philippians 4:9 is a great verse to point back to for evidence. Though many people tend to read this verse and get a bit upset with God because they think that all of their needs have not been met.
God is a good father and understand better than us what it we actually need. This verse is not only a great verse to express God’s goodness through provision, but it is also a good reminder to be content with what it is that we have. Because this verse does not just point to the future – it points to the here and now. God is currently providing for you. He is always faithful. What you have right now, might be exactly what you need, even if it doesn’t fit you image of provision.
LUKE 14:28-30 NIV
“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’
We must trust God even in the midst of financial stress, but this doesn’t give you and I the excuse to sit back and do nothing, hoping that God will take care of everything. The wise make plans. They prepare for unforeseen emergencies, and they create budgets so they can manage their money with excellence.
If you don’t already have a spending plan of your own, consider creating one today. It is the ultimate stewardship tool and when done well, it creates freedom to spend money on the things that you value most!
PROVERBS 22:7
The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender.
Being debt-free is such a blessing. The Bible has a lot of wisdom to share on the topic of debt. It is something that God wants all believers to experience, because he is the one who paid the ultimate debt for us. If you have debt, create a plan for paying it off quickly.
